Hong Kong dumps 452 tonnes of wood and rattan into its landfills every day, according to a 2019 report by the city’s Environmental Protection Department. But a local entrepreneur is hoping to enlist the help of the city’s cats, and their owners, to tackle part of the problem with a project that turns discarded wood into kitty litter.

Kelvin Shi Kam-fung collects used wooden pallets and recycles them at his 20,000 sq ft factory tucked away in an eastern area of Hong Kong along its border with the Chinese mainland. Cat litter made from the cast-off wood is already on sale at pet shops across the city.
