Bali’s economy, which relies largely on its tourism industry, has been suffering badly because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The island started welcoming Indonesian domestic visitors in July 2020 in an effort to revive its battered economy, but it has since experienced a surge in coronavirus cases. Local authorities have introduced stricter infection-control measures for the island, and have scrapped plans for a wider reopening to international travellers. As of September 24, Indonesia had confirmed 257,388 coronavirus cases and 9,977 deaths.
